CHALLENGE
Research a natural phenomenon and design a magazine dedicated to discussing and showcasing that phenomenon. Break down the information to easily explain the topic, and use both literal and figurative elements to express the ideas in visually engaging ways.
APPROACH
This project examine the natural phenomenon of pattern. I chose to explore this theme through the honeycomb structures created by honey bees. Within a hive, thousands of bees work together to form a connected system of interlocking hexagonal cells with remarkable geometric precision. The magazine highlights the many roles bees take on, such as, mathematicians, programmers, and architects, and how these functions combine to produce such mesmerizing structures.
The imagery blends figurative, expressive, and literal elements in order to reflect the complexity and beauty of the honeycomb. In contrast, the typography and layout are kept clean and simple, echoing the precise, almost clinical nature of the bees’ building process. The content is explored from both a micro and macro perspective, offering a broader and more nuanced view of this phenomenon.
